New rail connections and an information point for the Capital of Culture

The City of Chemnitz, the Central Saxony Transport Association and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH today announced news for the Capital of Culture year.

From now on, there will be an info point of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH at the main railway station. A user-friendly information screen and various information materials will be available there to help arriving guests find their way around Chemnitz. The Infopoint complements the visitor centre in the Hartmannfabrik and the tourist information centre on the market square.
"The new Infopoint at the main railway station is a visual welcome for all those travelling to Chemnitz by train," says Andrea Pier, Commercial Director of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH. "A good information infrastructure is important, especially for those who are visiting the city for the first time."

The city of Chemnitz is also setting up a new wayfinding system at the beginning of December, which will guide visitors from the main railway station to the city centre and the Hartmannfabrik. 56 new signs will improve pedestrian orientation in the city centre. Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "The many positive reactions to the publication of the programme for the coming year show me that we can expect a lot of out-of-town visitors, which is good for Chemnitz and the region. Among other things, these additional signs will make it easier for guests to find their way to the city centre and the Hartmannfabrik as the "heart" of the Capital of Culture."

There is news for long-distance rail travel: during the Capital of Culture year, additional long-distance trains will be added on weekends between 3 May and 5 October 2025 (as well as on 18/19 January and 29/30 November 2025), which will run directly on the Berlin - Chemnitz route without intermediate stops. This service is financed by Deutsche Bahn.

The Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (VMS) will offer numerous additional rail connections in the coming year together with its partners, such as the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn (MRB).
It is already certain that the connections from Chemnitz to Dresden, Leipzig and Zwickau/Hof (RE3, RB 30) will be reinforced with additional journeys and seats on selected event days and weekends. Rail services to and from Riesa and Elsterwerda will also be increased at certain points. Additional trains and buses will also run between Chemnitz and Annaberg-Buchholz, Obernhau-Grünthal, Stollberg, Thalheim, Aue, Oelsnitz/Erzg. and Marienberg.
The RE6 E train service between Chemnitz and Leipzig via Riesa will be used in addition to the direct RE6 service for major events (including the opening event, Kosmos and Hut Festival). While modern Coradia Continental electric multiple-unit trains will run via Riesa, comfortable double-decker trains will be used on the direct route during the Capital of Culture year, replacing the previous trains.

The VMS is also planning to deploy additional buses from Regionalverkehr Erzgebirge (RVE), REGIOBUS and Regionalverkehr Westsachsen (RVW) for selected event days. They will take visitors from the districts of Zwickau, Central Saxony and the Erzgebirge district comfortably to Chemnitz and other event locations in the region, for example along the Purple Path - the art and sculpture trail of the Capital of Culture.

As a further extra, the VMS will probably offer a bus connection between Chemnitz and Prague. Buses will take international visitors from the "Golden City" to the Capital of Culture region and back twice a day. The buses will stop at Prague's major international airport as well as the Veleslavin metro and tram station.
VMS Managing Director Matthias Korda: "I am sure that the VMS and its partners, such as the MRB, will impress our European visitors with our local transport services."

As an additional service, there will be a "Capital of Culture ticket" for visitors to the city. This is valid for three consecutive days throughout 2025 in the entire network area and costs 25 euros per person. The ticket is also worthwhile for groups: for up to five people, it costs 50 euros for three days. The ticket will be available digitally via the mobile phone ticket systems and conventionally via ticket printers from transport staff and selected service centres of the transport companies as well as at Capital of Culture sales outlets.
