The City of Chemnitz has launched a market exploration procedure to find new premises for the city archive. The first step is to check whether there is a suitable building to house the city archive within a maximum radius of five kilometres - starting from the town hall, Markt 1 - in Chemnitz.
The property must be designed in accordance with the specification "Construction of libraries and archives - Requirements and recommendations for planning" (DIN 67700:2017-05).
Connected office areas with a usable area of approx. 378 square metres are required, as well as areas for storing archive material (municipal cultural assets) with approx. 4,723 square metres of storage space, taking into account fire and air conditioning requirements.
In the storage area, archive-appropriate mobile shelving for around 39,000 linear metres of files and plans must be installed or available for effective use of the space. Furthermore, approx. 1,380 square metres are required for other areas with special uses (restoration workshop, quarantine room for archive material, cassation room, etc.).
The lease term should be at least 15 years with options to extend by at least five years or, alternatively, the possibility of a hire purchase. An advised possible start date for the lease is 1 January 2029.
Note: This market exploration does not give rise to any entitlement to the conclusion of a contract. No contract will be concluded.
Once the market exploration procedure has been completed, the next steps will be reviewed. If necessary, lease negotiations will then be conducted with providers of suitable properties.
The applicant's offer should contain at least information on the location, the space, the amount of the basic rent, the amount of the expected operating costs and the equipment of the building and the rooms, including building services and building management systems as well as any existing archive-compatible mobile shelving.
The offers can be sent to the City of Chemnitz, GMH, Friedensplatz 1, 09111 Chemnitz, in a sealed envelope marked "Marktterkundung Stadtarchiv" by 31 March 2026.
