New permanent exhibition at the Industrial Museum opens to visitors on Saturday

Reopening after almost a year of closure - History, present and future of the industry as a theme - Reduced admission on the opening weekend - Free admission for all under 18s

A new era begins for the Saxon Industrial Museum Chemnitz tomorrow at 10am. After almost a year of closure and remodelling, the industrial museum will reopen its doors to young and old.

A completely new permanent exhibition, designed by architects Space4 GmbH from Stuttgart, brings more than two centuries of industrial history closer to visitors in the halls of the museum. However, it is not only history that is on display in the museum, but also today and tomorrow in industry, technology and research.

"The Industrial Museum is a great museum and tells like no other about our self-image as the cradle, forge and future laboratory of industrialisation in Saxony and Germany," says Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig, who is also Chairwoman of the Zweckverband Sächsisches Industriemuseum.

The new permanent exhibition is divided into four thematic areas, in which important areas of the industrial world are presented, from mining and the textile industry to mechanical and automotive engineering and the social consequences of industrialisation. A highlight of the exhibition is a silver ribbon running through the entire hall, on which a selection of outstanding Saxon products and inventions can be seen.

The Industrial Museum celebrates its reopening with an opening weekend. In addition to the redesigned permanent exhibition, guests can look forward to a varied programme. The steam engine from 1896 can be seen in full operation and other machines will be demonstrated. Young visitors will have the opportunity to customise bags in the museum's educational workshop. In addition, children can build a mobile wooden car model together with their parents. All visitors can take advantage of the special reduced price of 4 euros per person on this weekend. Children and schoolchildren under the age of 18 can even visit the museum free of charge.

Not only is the permanent exhibition new, there are also other changes following the reopening: the closing day is now Mondays instead of Fridays and the opening hours have been pushed back by one hour (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). After the opening weekend, admission prices will be 7 euros, concessions 4 euros. A family ticket costs 12 euros, children and young people up to the age of 18 and schoolchildren over 18 with a valid school ID card are admitted free of charge.

A sum of two million euros was available for the redesign of the Industrial Museum's permanent exhibition. The project was funded by the Free State of Saxony, the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts and the City of Chemnitz.
