New name for the school at Vettersstraße 34
At its meeting today, the city council decided on the new name for the secondary school being built at Vettersstraße 34. At the start of the 2023/2024 school year and with the relocation of the former Annenschule - Oberschule - to its new location, the school will be named "Marianne-Brandt-Oberschule Chemnitz". The initiative for the name came from the school itself. Coordination with the Marianne Brandt Society took place in advance.
With the name Marianne Brandt, the school is named after a woman from Chemnitz whose name is known all over the world, but who is still under-recognised in Chemnitz. Only five municipal schools bear the name of a woman, compared to 28 that of a man.
Marianne Brandt was an exceptional talent and asserted herself as a woman at the Bauhaus, e.g. in the metal workshop. She was a creator and designer. She created new things that people still enjoy today. As Marianne Brandt also played music, made collages, painted pictures, took photographs and wrote poetry, she fits in perfectly with the Annenschule secondary school and its concept of a "school with a musical focus". This can be an incentive for everyone at the school. Bauhaus stands for modernity and thus fully corresponds to the slogan of the city of Chemnitz.
During the construction and furnishing of the new secondary school, it is planned to incorporate characteristic features of Marianne Brandt. This would be conceivable, for example, in the colour scheme, the lettering, the lamps or in the context of art on the building.
Construction of the three-form secondary school, including a two-court sports hall, is scheduled to begin in October 2020 and end in March 2023 at a cost of around 33.5 million. Of this, around 15.4 million euros in funding is planned.
