New Mongolian Manul tomcat at Chemnitz Zoo

Important contribution to the conservation of the Asian wild cat species

At the beginning of December, Mongolian Manul "Bob" moved into Chemnitz Zoo from the Dutch zoo in Volkel. The tomcat has already settled in well to his new surroundings.

The Mongolian manul (Otocolobus manu manul), also known as the Pallas's cat, is native to the vast steppes and mountainous regions of Central Asia, particularly Mongolia. There, the cold-resistant wild cat lives at altitudes of up to 5000 metres. Their extremely thick fur protects them from the extreme climatic conditions of their natural habitat - especially from icy temperatures and snow.
However, the species is under threat, mainly due to the loss of its food source. Their most important prey, including hares and marmots, are heavily hunted or even deliberately poisoned in many regions. In order to protect the species in the long term, it is listed in a European Stud Book (EEP), which supports coordinated and sustainable breeding.

Chemnitz Zoo has been keeping Manule since 2015 and has already successfully reared several cubs. With the new male cat and the Manul cat from Italy, which is expected to arrive soon, the zoo hopes to form a stable, genetically valuable breeding pair to contribute to the conservation of these rare and fascinating wild cats.
