On Thursday, 30 October at 11 a.m., interested parties are invited to a guided tour of the property at Philippstraße 21. Under the motto "New life for old houses", representatives of the City of Chemnitz's Urban Planning and Property Office, the StadtWohnen Chemnitz agency and the building owner REWOBAU GmbH & Co KG will be providing information about the project on the so-called Sonnenberger Promenade to mark World Cities Day.
Representatives of the media are invited to a press conference on site at 10.30 am.
The listed residential building from the Wilhelminian era is located on the future "Sonnenberger Promenade", which will be remodelled in sections over the coming years. The monument, which has been vacant for a long time, will be structurally secured by the owner until the end of 2026 with the help of urban development funding. This will be followed by the fundamental refurbishment of the corner building that characterises the cityscape.
Background Sonnenberger Promenade
A few years ago, the city council approved a design study for the "Sonnenberger Promenade", which will extend along the Wilhelminian-style streets from south to north from Augustusburger Straße via Körnerplatz and Lessingplatz to Zeisigwald. This already includes well-designed sections in the centre of Sonnenberg. Now, thanks to European funding and urban development funding, the redesign can take place in the north. Reinhardtstraße between Lessingplatz and Palmstraße will be completely renovated and remodelled by 2027. The ideas for the "Zeisigpfad", energy fields and the "Sonnenberger Baum" were developed as connecting elements in the study with broad public participation and are to be found all along the promenade. Citizen workshops and an artists' walk have already taken place to design the three elements.
Background to the residential building at Philippstrasse 21
Following GGG's decision to sell the residential building at Philippstraße 21 around ten years ago, the city's "Agentur StadtWohnen Chemnitz" project informed a large number of interested parties about the building, carried out inspections with a number of them and advised them on available funding opportunities. This is one of the agency's core tasks as a coordination centre for the revitalisation of unrenovated vacant old buildings in Chemnitz.
In 2016, REWOBAU GmbH & Co. KG acquired the building at Philippstraße 21 and began construction planning. The company has already renovated several residential buildings from the Wilhelminian era in Chemnitz, including Zietenstraße 28 and Frankenberger Straße 51. As a property developer, the company has renovated a further six residential buildings in Chemnitz.
