New information stele on Theatre Square is unveiled
Christmas carol singing and inauguration on 17 December from 5 pm
On Sunday, 17 December, a new information stele for Theaterplatz will be unveiled in the late afternoon. Beforehand, from 5 p.m., all Chemnitz residents are invited to join Lord Mayor Sven Schulze in singing Christmas carols on the theatre square. The public Christmas carol singing by Chemnitz Municipal Theatre took place for the first time last year.
Afterwards, at around 5.50 pm, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and General Director Dr Christoph Dittrich will unveil the new information stele on the Straße der Nationen between the Theatron and Chemnitzer Hof.
This stele provides information in two languages about the history of the square and the neighbouring buildings, such as the Opera House, the Chemnitz Art Collections, St. Peter's Church and the Hotel Chemnitzer Hof. Chemnitz residents and visitors can learn more about the history of the city on site.
Half of the 14th information stele was financed by donations from citizens of the city (1250 euros). The other half of the costs, totalling 2,500 euros, were borne by the City of Chemnitz.
Further steles are planned for the coming year, including at the Stadthalle and the ice sports centre. Donations are still being collected for this. From a donation of 250 euros, the name of the donor can be named on a stele and is thus forever associated with the city. Anyone interested can contact us on 0371 488 1502 or by email at protokoll@stadt-chemnitz.de.
The information steles project is being planned and implemented by the Mayor's Department together with the Chemnitz History Society, the Association of Tour Guides, the City Archive of Chemnitz and the City of Chemnitz Monument Protection Authority.
