New head of the Environmental Agency
City Council elects Carina Kühnel as successor to Dr Thomas Scharbrodt

At its meeting yesterday, the city council elected Carina Kühnel as the new head of the City of Chemnitz's environmental department. The 60-year-old has been in charge of the Environment Agency since September 2021, following the retirement of the previous head of the agency, Dr Thomas Scharbrodt.
Carina Kühnel, a native of Chemnitz, studied physics at Chemnitz University of Technology and has worked for the City of Chemnitz as head of the environmental department since 1991. She lives near Chemnitz with her family.
In addition to nature conservation, water protection, pollution control and climate protection, the environmental department is also responsible for waste, contaminated sites and soil protection.
