New General Director of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz elected
Dr Florence Thurmes is expected to take over the management at the beginning of 2024
The City Council today elected Dr Florence Thurmes as the new General Director of the Chemnitz Art Collections. As things stand, the 42-year-old will take up her post at the beginning of next year.
Dr Florence Thurmes was born in Luxembourg and has many years of varied professional experience in managing collections, curating exhibitions and designing participatory formats. She is currently at the helm of the Museum Ostwall in the Dortmunder U - Dortmund's municipal museum. Before that, she was head of the programme department at the Dresden State Art Collections and is well connected in the Free State of Saxony. After studying modern and contemporary art and completing her doctorate in France, she worked for many years as a curator in Luxembourg and Germany.
Mayor of Culture Dagmar Ruscheinsky: "I am very pleased that we have been able to recruit Dr Thurmes as General Director of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. Her extensive experience in the field of modern art history and her handling of it in collections and museums have convinced us that she is an excellent choice for this position. In particular, the new General Director will benefit from her many years of experience from her work at the Dresden Art Collections. She already knows the East German and especially the Saxon cultural landscape in detail. I look forward to a good working relationship with her."
Dr Florence Thurmes: "I would like to thank the City Council for the trust they have placed in me. I am delighted to lead the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz into the year of the European Capital of Culture 2025 - a unique opportunity. Together with the team, I would like to further develop and promote the museums, whose programme I have been following with great interest for years. It is particularly important to me to involve the people of Chemnitz and the surrounding area, to offer children and young people an even better programme and to network more closely with the region and its rich cultural offerings. The Chemnitz Art Collections have many treasures that we can be proud of."
