New from January 2014: Severely disabled person's ID card in chip card format
As a handy plastic card (photo), the severely disabled person's ID card is now also presented in the same way as driving licences, ID cards and bank cards. The new severely disabled person's ID card in chip card format will be issued in Chemnitz and in all other Saxon municipalities from January 2014 .
Disabled citizens with an established degree of disability of at least 50 will receive a severely disabled person's ID card. A passport photo is still required for the ID card to be issued and must be submitted to the City of Chemnitz Social Welfare Office, Social Services Department, Severely Disabled Persons' Rights Division in the Moritzhof Citizens' and Administration Centre (Bahnhofstraße 53).
Previously, a severely disabled person's ID card could be collected in person from the customer portal of the Social Services Department in Chemnitz on presentation of an identity card and passport photo. This will change with the plastic card in chip card format offered from January 2014, as the printing of the ID cards will be centralised and delivered directly to the citizen by post within a few days.
Note for citizens who already have a severely disabled person's ID card: Severely disabled ID cards that have already been issued remain valid, i.e. they do not need to be exchanged.
With the redesign of the severely disabled person's ID card in chip card format, the Federal Government is fulfilling a requirement of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
