New fee structure at the sports boarding school
At its meeting today, the city council approved a new fee schedule for the sports boarding school at the Sportforum. The reason for this is the greatly improved quality of living at the site.
Since the beginning of March 2016, refurbishment and conversion work has been taking place in the former "Haus des Sports", supplemented by a new building. At a cost of around 7.12 million euros, the city is converting the building formerly used by the sports office at the Sportforum on Reichenhainer Straße into a boarding school, primarily for sports students. The new building extension will also provide more space for leisure rooms, among other things. The local authority is financing around 4.29 million euros of the project budget itself and 2.83 million euros are subsidies from the state of Saxony. Once the project is complete, the remodelled and extended building will provide 182 modern boarding places in four-person shared flats, in which two residents share a room and four residents share a sanitary unit. Two barrier-free living areas are also being created as part of this construction project. A multifunctional room with a kitchen, a creative room and a larger room for table tennis and billiards are planned for the ground floor.
In total, a place in the boarding school costs 640 euros per month, of which the city of Chemnitz pays 403.20 euros (63 per cent). This means that 236.80 euros per month are to be paid by the legal guardians for care and accommodation. After deducting the fixed amount subsidy of €165 per month in accordance with the Saxon Accommodation Ordinance (SächsUVO), parents who fulfil the relevant requirements are left with a contribution of €71.80 for accommodation and care. For recipients of benefits under the Second Book of the German Social Code (SGB II) - basic security for jobseekers - and social welfare recipients (SGB XII), the costs are fully covered by a social grant in accordance with the SächsUVO.
For all pupils from year 10 onwards, there is also the possibility of funding via the Schüler-BAföG. Students who do not come from Saxony can be supported by the State Sports Association or the German Sports Aid Organisation.
The increase in the fee schedule comes into force on 1 May 2018. Residents will move into the boarding school after the 2018 Easter holidays.
