New construction of Augustusburger Straße/Theresenstraße junction
At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council approved the construction of the new Augustusburger Straße/Theresenstraße junction. This will provide access for delivery and customer traffic to the so-called "Johannisvorstadt" with the building complexes still to be constructed in the MK1 to MK4 construction sites. Theresenstrasse will be connected to Augustusburger Strasse via a fixed carriageway. The access road will be significantly enlarged for deliveries. When the CVAG railway tracks were extended, a fixed track crossing was already created as an extension of Theresenstraße. To ensure traffic safety, a new complex traffic light system will be installed in the crossing area, which will also control tram traffic.
To connect the new junction, footpaths, cycle paths and parking spaces along Augustusburger Straße will be adapted. The cycle traffic routing will be fundamentally revised. The excessively wide carriageway of Augustusburger Straße in this area will be restructured so that continuous cycle lanes can be created on both sides.
In addition, 23 metres of the existing Theresenstraße, which serves as an access road for the residential area, will be completely rebuilt, mainly for cars.
In the course of the reorganisation of areas, several street trees south of the railway tracks will have to be felled. New trees will be planted in the green areas next to the junction to replace them.
The construction work will be carried out from April to December 2022. During this period, traffic on Augustusburger Straße will be restricted, i.e. only one lane will be accessible in both the urban and rural directions.
The construction area is expected to be fully closed for the expansion of Theresenstrasse. Residents and neighbours will be guaranteed access via temporary lanes. Tram traffic will not be obstructed.
The costs for the overall expansion amount to approx. 765,000 euros, financed from the City of Chemnitz's own funds. This amount is included in the budget.
