New construction of a pedestrian bridge in Küchwaldpark

Construction work begins in September

The bridge over the Sauborn had to be closed in autumn 2012 after storm damage - a huge beech tree had fallen onto the bridge - and was later completely dismantled. In recent years, citizens have repeatedly expressed their desire for the bridge to be rebuilt.

The replacement construction of a new pedestrian bridge in Küchwaldpark is intended to restore the path connection (Sechserweg) from the Küchwaldring road (at the junction with Altendorfer Straße) to the main path (Cottaschneise) in Küchwaldpark.

In preparation for the necessary planning, the Parks Department examined the reusability of the old foundations and organised the provision of financial resources. In May of this year, once the funds for the necessary complete replacement construction, including the foundations, had been released, the planning work was finalised and the construction work put out to public tender.

As the Küchwaldpark is a listed area, an approx. 10 metre long and 3.75 metre wide pedestrian bridge with a slightly arched steel structure with wooden decking and tubular railings will be built based on the historical model.

The preparatory work will begin in mid-September. This involves cutting back trees and trimming branches hanging down in the access area. Two trees have to be felled in the area of the excavation pit. Most of this work will be carried out by the Parks Department itself.

The main construction work will then begin at the end of September. The construction work should essentially be completed this year. Depending on the weather, the remaining work and the landscaping work will then be completed by the end of March 2017.

The work will be carried out by Connect Tief- und Ingenieurbau GmbH from Wiesen. The engineering firm Huback from Leipzig, which also provided the planning services, has been commissioned with the local construction supervision.

The costs for the replacement construction of the bridge total approx. 130,000 euros.
