New bridge construction at Dresdner Platz: Prefabricated bridge sections will be lifted into place from mid-October

One of the most important construction projects currently underway in the city of Chemnitz - the reconstruction of Dresdner Platz and Waisenstraße - will enter a further realisation phase from mid-October 2012 with the lifting of the new prefabricated bridge sections: The abutments on the eastern side of the bridge have been erected since the beginning of April 2012, and the abutments on the western side of the bridge have been under construction since the beginning of September 2012. The prefabricated composite girders are being manufactured directly on site in two field factories. For this purpose, concrete slabs approx. 1.86 metres wide are concreted onto the delivered steel box girders.

For the assembly of the prefabricated parts, each weighing approx. 20 tonnes, DB AG's night-time shutdowns are used so as not to disrupt rail traffic to Chemnitz main station. The girders will be assembled during the night closure breaks from midnight to 4am. The plan is to install the first of a total of 68 prefabricated composite girders on Monday, 15 October 2012.
The installation of a maximum of five girders per night is planned. According to the city's civil engineering department, the large crane for the assembly of bridge segments 2 to 4 will be in place in October.
The assembly of the prefabricated bridge sections will take place at irregular intervals until January 2013. Parallel to the night-time assembly work, the approx. 120 metre wide Dresdner Platz bridge, which is divided into nine separate bridge segments, will be completed during the day with reinforcement and concrete to form a frame bridge structure.

The new bridge at Dresdner Platz will be provisionally open to traffic for the first time in summer 2013. The temporary bridge can be dismantled and the temporary road removed once the new superstructure is in place, and the new bridge replacement will be completed and finalised at the same time.

The final completion of the construction project is scheduled for the end of 2013.
The total costs amount to approx. 24.8 million euros.
