New blood among the Kulanen
Tierpark Chemnitz: Breeding success with Asian half donkeys - evening tour on 2 August, 7.30 p.m.
The Chemnitz Zoo is currently home to the offspring of the Asian half-donkeys - the culans. The female foal was born on 20 June. Mother and father are the five-year-old mare "Sansa" and the seven-year-old "Nikolaj", who has only been living at the zoo since last year.
The new breeding stallion "Nikolaj" came to Chemnitz from Kosice Zoo in Slovakia in April 2023 as part of the European Conservation Breeding Programme. After a relatively short period of time, the first offspring has now arrived at Chemnitz Zoo for several years. The gestation period of a kulan is about eleven months. We are therefore delighted that the new stallion was born so quickly.
Kulans belong to the half-donkey family. However, they are not a cross between a horse and a donkey, but an independent species with mixed characteristics. For example, the ears are more horse-like, while the tail is donkey-like.
Half-donkeys were once widespread across large parts of Asia, but today only small, dwindling populations remain. The subspecies of kulan is considered highly endangered. Mainly hunting, but also the heavy agricultural utilisation of their habitat threaten the populations.
Breeding successes in zoological institutions can save endangered species such as the kulan from extinction. Chemnitz Zoo is actively involved in the conservation breeding of this species. It has been kept in Chemnitz for more than 50 years and there have already been several offspring.
Evening tour of the zoo
On Friday, 2 August at 7.30 pm, interested parties are once again invited to an evening tour of Chemnitz Zoo. What do the animals in the zoo do in the evening or at night? Who goes to sleep and who only really wakes up in the evening? These and other questions will be explored here.
The tour lasts approx. 90 minutes. Participation in the tour costs 10 euros per person.
The evening tour is suitable for children aged 12 and over, but the offer is of course also aimed at adults.
The number of participants is limited. Registration is required by 3 p.m. on 1 August at
at tierpark@st adt-chemnitz.de.
Tickets can be purchased at the Tierpark ticket office during regular opening hours once registration has been confirmed. There is no box office. Cancellations and participation with dogs are not possible.
