New animal species is presented: Assumption day gecko
Photo opportunity: 28 September, 2 p.m., Tierpark, meeting point: entrance to the tropical house
On Saturday, 28 September, Chemnitz Zoo and the Phelsuma* interest group will be presenting a new species: the Assumption day gecko.
The special thing about it: on this day, the geckos will be allowed into the free-flight hall of the tropical house and can move freely there alongside many different bird species.
To make it easier for visitors to search for geckos, individual animals will also be on display in a terrarium in the foyer of the Tropical House.
Media representatives are welcome to accompany this event.
The meeting point is on Saturday, 28 September at 2 pm in front of the entrance to the Tropical House.
The Assumption day gecko only occurs in a small area on the island of Assumption in the Seychelles. Due to this small distribution area, this subspecies is considered to be threatened with extinction. Together with IG Phelsuma, Chemnitz Zoo wants to actively participate in the conservation breeding of this day gecko. The zoo is the only zoological institution in Europe to exhibit this subspecies.
*The Phelsuma Interest Group is an association of around 250 members that has existed since 1992. The common goals are research into the phelsuma, the dissemination of knowledge about these beautiful day geckos and the conservation breeding of as many different phelsuma species as possible.
Opening hours in September:
Zoo: 9 am to 7 pm, last admission 6 pm
Game enclosure: 8 am to 6 pm, last admission 5 pm
