New animal species at the Oberrabenstein game reserve
Wildgatterfest on 21 and 22 September, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day
A new animal species has moved into the wildlife park: the European badger. The newly built badger enclosure was officially handed over to the Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park last Wednesday, 11 September, by the "Tierparkfreunde Chemnitz e. V." association.
Back in May of this year, two male animals came to Chemnitz from the Anholter Schweiz biotope park, where they were born in February 2023. Initially, the two brothers "Joschi" and "Brummi" were still housed in the Chemnitz zoo due to the construction work in the wildlife enclosure. In the meantime, however, they have settled into the spacious enclosure in Oberrabenstein.
Badgers are easily recognised by their black and white striped fur and their wedge-shaped, pointed face. They are widespread throughout most of Europe, including Germany. Badgers are martens and therefore also predators. However, their diet is quite varied and consists to a large extent of plant food.
Badgers are mainly crepuscular and nocturnal. During the day, they prefer to stay in burrows they have dug themselves. One of these burrows can even be seen by visitors to the wildlife park.
Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park invites you to the Wildlife Park Festival
On Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 September, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the popular Wildgatterfest will once again take place at the Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park. The members of the "Tierparkfreunde Chemnitz e. V." association and the staff of the wildlife park have put together a programme for young and old with great dedication.
In addition to the European wild animals, which are kept on around 35 hectares of woodland, visitors of all ages can look forward to lots of interesting facts and numerous hands-on activities on these two days. Highlights include a presentation on the work of hunting dogs and archery.
The association's volunteer members have prepared handicrafts, games and a wheel of fortune. "Ask the gamekeeper" will provide answers to the questions that visitors have always wanted to ask. Food and drink will also be provided.
