Native orchids - in Chemnitz and beyond
Lecture by the Environmental Agency on 23 October, 5 pm at Moritzhof
On Tuesday, 23 October at 5 pm, the Environment Agency invites you to a lecture on the orchid plant family. The event will take place in the Moritzhof, 6th floor, room 647. (Please note: change to the event schedule!)
Orchids are popular ornamental plants. But few people realise that there are also orchids in our native nature, albeit rather inconspicuous ones with smaller flowers. There are currently 27 species in the whole of Saxony. As orchids react very sensitively to changes in land use - for example fertilisation or abandonment of wet meadows - and are less competitive than other plants, many species have unfortunately already become extinct or have suffered severe population losses. For this reason, all species are under legal protection and the focus of nature conservation.
The lecture will report on native orchid species in Chemnitz, Saxony and throughout Germany as well as on endangerment and conservation measures, focussing on conservation measures and successes implemented in Chemnitz.
