Naming ceremony of the Alexander von Humboldt Secondary School

On Monday, 6 September at 9.30 am, the secondary school at Arno-Schreiter-Straße 1 will be given the new name Alexander-von-Humboldt-Oberschule. Mayor Ralph Burghart unveils the name plate in a festive ceremony.
Citizens, parents, teachers and pupils were involved in the naming process in accordance with the naming guidelines for schools in the city of Chemnitz. At the end of last year, the school conference (school committee consisting of the school management, student, parent and teacher representatives) decided in favour of the name Alexander-von-Humboldt-Oberschule Chemnitz from numerous name suggestions.
In June 2021, the city council decided that the secondary school at Arno-Schreiter-Straße 1 would bear the name Alexander-von-Humboldt-Oberschule Chemnitz from the 2021/2022 school year.
The explanatory statement said: "As an enlightened explorer, Humboldt was a man characterised by a thirst for knowledge who, as a polymath and with his love of nature, created a ground-breaking scientific network of his own. It is precisely the complexity of Humboldt's work and his impact as a pioneer of ecological thinking that leaves room for the development of the secondary school.
At the start of the 2018/19 school year, the city of Chemnitz opened the renovated school building - the former Werner Heisenberg Grammar School - initially as a branch of the Albert Schweitzer Secondary School. It has been an independent secondary school site since 2020/2021.
The three-form entry school has space for 450 pupils. During the refurbishment from 2016 to 2018, approaches for inclusive teaching were taken into account.
