Municipal budget approved by state authorities without conditions
The State Directorate of Saxony has approved the budget of the City of Chemnitz without any conditions. Accordingly, the supervisory authority confirms the budget bylaws adopted by the city council in February by a large majority without any conditions.
Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "The planned investments can now begin. The focus continues to be on schools and daycare centres as well as road construction. In addition, the budget for sport has been significantly increased. This means that Chemnitz will continue to move forward. And: we have been able to present a balanced budget for the first time since 2010. This has also required us to make difficult decisions in the past and at the same time we have kept the city on a good course."
The 2015 budget shows a positive double-digit result. With income totalling 649.5 million euros and expenses of 648.3 million euros, the overall result is 1.2 million euros. "This is the first budget in which we have succeeded in balancing the budget using double-entry accounting," says City Treasurer Berthold Brehm.
The city's investment programme for 2015, which totals EUR 54.7 million, will once again focus on the renovation of schools and daycare centres, the road network and flood protection measures. A further focus will be on investment in sports facilities to further improve the conditions for popular and elite sport. The school gymnasiums and the gradual refurbishment of the indoor swimming pools will remain the main focus.
The decision authorised borrowing of EUR 4.36 million for investments and investment promotion measures as well as commitment appropriations for subsequent years amounting to EUR 9.5 million.
The City of Chemnitz has succeeded in balancing the budget in accordance with the law. Another positive aspect assessed by the legal supervisory authority is the reduction in existing liabilities, which totalled 126.6 million euros between 2004 and 2014.
