Mourning for Prof Thomas Geßner

Mayor Barbara Ludwig honours work for the city of Chemnitz

The Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS, Prof Thomas Geßner, died unexpectedly on Wednesday at the age of just 61.

Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "I am deeply saddened by the sudden death of Prof Thomas Geßner. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family in these difficult hours.

His death is an immeasurable loss for Chemnitz as a centre of science. In him, we have lost an extremely committed scientist, visionary and, last but not least, an exemplary ambassador for our city in the world.

One of his greatest achievements was undoubtedly the establishment of the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems, which is now one of the largest Fraunhofer Institutes. He also played a key role in the development of the Smart Systems Campus. Thanks to his efforts, the Technology Park today also stands as a first-class research location for the proverbial Chemnitz spirit of invention and entrepreneurship."
