More offspring at the zoo
New additions to the alpacas
As usual in spring, when conditions are ideal for mother and offspring, the hoofed animals at the zoo have given birth to more young.
The small herd of Przewalski's horses has grown to include a female foal. It is already the fourth generation: mother Shenja was born at Chemnitz Zoo in 2009, grandmother Piruschka in 1993 and the very old great-grandmother Ona was born in Antwerp in 1987.
A female cub was also born to the West Caucasian ibex.
Alpacas from other zoos have joined the South American enclosure: the one-year-old mare Raffaella from Straubing Zoo and the one-year-old stallion Jacob from Hirschfeld Zoo. They will rejuvenate the Chemnitz herd, which consists of two other mares that have been living at the zoo for over ten years.
Incidentally, the pygmy hippos have recently been seen with the young animal in the outdoor enclosure.
Please note:
On Friday, 3 June, Chemnitz Zoo will close at 5 pm due to a charity event for chronically ill and disabled children and young people ("Dreamnight at the zoo"), last admission is 4 pm.
