On Monday, 20 April, extensive renovation work will begin on the urn community facility known as the "Monopteros" at the cemetery on Reichenhainer Straße. The structure, an architecturally significant circular building near the entrance to the municipal crematorium, will be professionally repaired after years of closure.
The columned building, designed by renowned architect Erich Basarke, serves as a burial site for urns. Burials were sometimes open, sometimes behind protective stone slabs. Due to massive structural defects, the building had to be cordoned off with a construction fence in recent years and secured from decay in an arched segment by a temporary support.
Immediately following the structural restoration of the Monopteros, there are plans to upgrade the design of the immediate surroundings. The paths will be repaired and plants will be planted around the base of the Monopteros.
This important testimony to regional sepulchral culture will thus be permanently preserved for the public and restored to a worthy condition.
The total cost of the project is around 170,000 euros. The restoration is being made possible by funding from the Free State of Saxony from the special monument preservation programme (approx. 70 percent funding rate).
The company Heidelmann & Klingebiel Planungsgesellschaft mbH was commissioned with the planning. The Dresden-based specialist office prepared a detailed damage survey and mapping of measures and coordinated the necessary structural planning, which was carried out by Henneker Zillinger Beratende Ingenieure Leipzig.
The stonemason's workshop Scheunert from Stollberg/Erzgeb. was commissioned to carry out the work.
