"Mobility in cities - SrV 2013" - Chemnitz is part of the nationwide transport survey project

The survey of selected households begins in January - by the end of 2013, more than 100 German cities and municipalities will be surveyed on the mobility of their citizens

Are buses and bicycles actually used more in Chemnitz than they were a few years ago? How large is the proportion of car traffic in comparison? Have journey times been reduced and accessibility improved? Have important urban and transport planning goals such as improved air quality and falling accident figures been achieved? - The answers to these and similar questions are of great interest to both transport planners and the general public: Changes in the mobility of the population must be recognised in good time and it must also be regularly checked whether, for example, transport planning measures have actually led to the desired results.

In order to gain current insights into the mobility and transport situation, the Technical University of Dresden is conducting a household survey on the transport behaviour of the resident population together with the city of Chemnitz. This makes Chemnitz one of over 100 German cities and municipalities in which the mobility of citizens is being analysed at the same time in the research project "Mobility in Cities - SrV 2013". (The abbreviation SrV stands for System of Representative Transport Surveys).

The survey will begin in January 2013 and will be conducted until December 2013. The addresses of the households to be surveyed were drawn at random: In Chemnitz, a total of 5,000 households will receive an announcement letter informing them about the survey and asking them to participate. Participation in the survey is of course voluntary.

Information about the household and the household members is requested: This includes, for example, the number of cars in the household and the frequency of use of public transport. Particularly important is the information on the journeys made by all persons living in the household for a given reference date. This includes, for example, the means of transport used and the distances travelled. People who were not travelling on the reference date are expressly of interest for the survey, as the aim is to record the average transport behaviour of the entire resident population. In order to include as many population groups as possible, the survey is carried out as a combined telephone and written survey. It is also possible to answer the questions via online access on the Internet.

The TU Dresden has commissioned the Leipzig-based institute Omnitrend GmbH to carry out the survey. All data is collected there, anonymised and passed on to TU Dresden for evaluation. Compliance with data protection regulations is of course guaranteed.

The TU Dresden and the City of Chemnitz/Civil Engineering Office are asking all selected households to take part in the survey, as it is only through the active participation of as many citizens as possible that representative data can be obtained, which is essential for needs-based transport planning.

The "Mobility in Cities" project has been conducted since 1972 as a long-term study of transport behaviour. In 2013, the Technical University of Dresden is updating the longest-serving German time series on the transport behaviour of the resident population for the tenth time. The results will primarily provide city-specific findings on the state of transport development. They are supplemented by a comparison with cities and municipalities of a similar size. The overall sample of more than 120,000 people also allows cross-city trends to be analysed, e.g. against the background of demographic change.
