Mobile classrooms for Chemnitz secondary schools
City Council decides on unscheduled provision of financial resources
At its meeting today, the city council decided to provide 1.96 million euros for the construction of mobile classrooms at the "Am Flughafen" secondary school site.
A further 400,000 euros in planning funds will be used to prepare for the temporary expansion of capacity at the Gablenz and Schönau secondary schools.
As the school authority, the city of Chemnitz must provide sufficient school places. Due to the steady increase in pupil numbers, an additional 15 classes in grades 5 to 10 are expected over the next few years, starting in the 2019/20 school year. Mobile classrooms will be used to meet the growing demand in the short term.
Three mobile classrooms will already be built at the "Am Flughafen" secondary school site for the 2019/20 school year and a further six classrooms from the 2020/21 school year. The mobile classrooms at the Oberschule/GS Altendorf are the model for the system.
The facilities for the Oberschule Gablenz and Oberschule Schönau sites will not be required until the start of the 2020/2021 school year. However, in order to achieve the necessary planning lead time for implementation in 2019/2020, funds will already be made available in 2018 for planning and preparatory construction work (development). This will require 200,000 euros per site.
The city will respond to the permanent increase in pupil numbers by building several new schools. A proposal for a decision on this is to be submitted to the city council as part of the school network planning still to be drawn up this year.
The use of mobile classrooms is necessary to bridge the period until new schools are built. These can be used flexibly and at short notice to compensate for capacity requirements due to their high degree of prefabrication, quick assembly and floor plan variability. If necessary, the modules can also be relocated to another site.
