Memorial plaque for youth detention centre is inaugurated
Ceremonial unveiling on 4 April, 4 p.m., Klaffenbach moated castle, inner courtyard
On Tuesday, 4 April at 4 pm, Mayor Knut Kunze will unveil an information and memorial plaque at Wasserschloß Klaffenbach, Wasserschloßweg 6, which commemorates the history of the municipal monument as a former youth work camp. Christian Gaubert from the Geschlossener Jugendwerkhof Torgau memorial centre will also speak.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend. The memorial plaque is located in the inner courtyard, in the direction of the castle hotel.
The "Rosa Luxemburg" youth work centre was established in Klaffenbach in 1949 and remained in operation until 1990. Up to 100 young women who had become "conspicuous" and "showed that they were not growing into socialist personalities" were housed there at any one time. Many of them still suffer from the consequences of systematic re-education today. A total of 49 youth work centres existed in the GDR over the years.
At the same time, the mobile memorial "Blackbox Heimerziehung" of the Torgau Closed Youth Welfare Centre Memorial opens on the same day. A converted sea container with an indoor and outdoor exhibition and an associated online module shows the fates of former GDR children in institutions and also focuses specifically on the history of the "Rosa Luxemburg" youth work centre in Klaffenbach moated castle.
The "Blackbox Heimerziehung" is located next to the candle shop and is open every Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. until 25 April.
