"Meet the USA! Culture. Dialogue. Encounter."
German-American Meeting Day on 12 June in Chemnitz
On Friday, 12 June, the German-American meeting day "Meet the USA! Culture. Dialogue. Encounter." will take place. The City of Chemnitz is organising the format together with the Consulate General of the United States of America in Leipzig and is focusing on personal encounters, exchange formats and open cooperation.
At the beginning of the day, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will welcome the US Consul General Jodi Breisler to the City Hall, where she will sign the city's Golden Book. Representatives of the media are invited to 10.30 am in the Green Salon.
The Consul General will then visit Einsiedel Grammar School together with the Lord Mayor. 11.40 a.m. A direct exchange with students on an English performance course is planned there. As part of the Consulate General's "MeetUS" format, the young people will have the opportunity to ask questions about international topics, education and social engagement. Representatives of the media are also invited.
At 13:30, a football match will take place in the junior stadium of the Chemnitz Sports Forum to mark the Football World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico from 11 June. Pupils from the Goethe-Gymnasium will compete together with young people from the USA. The students from Fargo in the US state of North Dakota will be visiting Chemnitz from 7 June to 26 June as part of the GAPP exchange programme. From 3.30 pm, all interested parties are invited to join the Consul General, the Lord Mayor, alumni and current scholarship holders of transatlantic exchange programmes for coffee and cake at the Stadtwirtschaft Chemnitz. A public round table discussion will also begin at 4.45 pm in the Stadtwirtschaft, where current issues in German-American relations can be discussed: In light of the current political crises, will Europe and the USA come closer together again or drift further apart? And does German foreign policy also affect our everyday lives? Laura-Louise Scheller, representative of the Federal Foreign Office and currently working in the country department for the USA and Canada, and Prof Dr Kai Oppermann, holder of the Chair of International Politics at Chemnitz University of Technology, will be on hand to discuss these issues.

From 5.45 pm to 10 pm , visitors can look forward to a cultural programme with live music and literary contributions in the courtyard of the Stadtwirtschaft. In addition to the Big Band of the Municipal Music School, "The Soldiers Chorus", a high-energy pop and rock band, will round off the evening musically. Admission is free. At 6 pm, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre invites you to a wine tasting of US wines at the Stadtwirtschaft, Jakobstraße 46. The event will provide insights into the development of Californian viticulture: from its beginnings to its current importance as the most important wine region in the USA.
