Measures to protect against bird flu at Chemnitz Zoo
Chemnitz Zoo is currently implementing measures to protect against bird flu (avian influenza). Aviaries and enclosures in which birds are housed are covered with tarpaulins. The Chemnitz fire brigade is actively assisting the zoo with this.
Some birds also have to be moved indoors, e.g. the parrots. The duck pond is drained so that the wild ducks have no incentive to stay there.
Due to these measures, not all of the zoo's bird population can be seen at the moment. We ask visitors for their understanding.
Since waterfowl have died of avian influenza (also known colloquially as bird flu) of the currently widespread subtype H5N8 in the Leipzig area, the State Directorate of Saxony has ordered animal disease control measures. These are intended to prevent birds in flocks from being infected with the pathogen by wild birds.
The H5N8 virus first appeared in poultry flocks in South Korea at the beginning of 2014. Human infections have not yet been detected worldwide.
