Mayors for Peace: Flag Day and art competition
Children and young people can submit works of art until 30 September
On Saturday, 8 July, the Mayors for Peace flags will once again be raised - including at Chemnitz City Hall. Since 2006, Chemnitz has been a member of Mayors for Peace, an international network of cities committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons and lasting global peace.
The Mayors for Peace Flag Day commemorates a legal opinion of the International Court of Justice in The Hague (the main judicial body of the United Nations), which was published on 8 July 1996. The ICJ stated that "there is an obligation under international law to conduct and conclude negotiations in good faith leading to nuclear disarmament in all its aspects under strict and effective international control." As a clear and visible reminder of this, hundreds of cities and municipalities in Germany are flying the Mayors for Peace flag in front of their town halls.
In this context, Mayors for Peace is once again calling on children and young people of different age groups to engage with the topic of peace and take part in the art competition "What peace means to me".
The works can be sent to the City of Chemnitz, Mayor's Department, Division 09.1 - European and International Relations, Protocol, Markt 1, 09111 Chemnitz until 30 September 2023.

Following the competition, the works will be presented to the public in an exhibition on Chemnitz Peace Day 2024.
