On Tuesday, 8 July, the Mayors for Peace flags will once again be raised at Chemnitz Town Hall. Mayors for Peace is an international network of cities committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons and lasting global peace. The city of Chemnitz has been a member of Mayors for Peace since 2006.
The Mayors for Peace Flag Day commemorates a legal opinion of the International Court of Justice in The Hague (the main judicial body of the United Nations), which was published on 8 July 1996. The International Court of Justice stated that "there is an obligation under international law to conduct and conclude negotiations in good faith leading to nuclear disarmament in all its aspects under strict and effective international control." As a clear and visible reminder of this, hundreds of cities and municipalities in Germany are flying the Mayors for Peace flag in front of their town halls.
In this context, Mayors for Peace is once again calling on children and young people aged 6 to 15 to engage with the topic of peace and take part in the art competition "What Peace Means to Me".
The drawings can be handed in at Chemnitz City Hall up to and including 21 September 2025 or sent to the following address City of Chemnitz, Division 09.1 (European and International Relations, Protocol), Markt 1, 09111 Chemnitz.
