Mayors for Peace competition: Children paint for peace
Exhibition opening on 21 February, 3.30 pm, town hall, exhibition room
On Wednesday, 21 February at 3.30 pm, Mayor Knut Kunze and the young artists will open the exhibition of children's artworks "Colourful Dreams of Peace" in the exhibition room on the ground floor of the town hall. The exhibition will include drawings submitted by Chemnitz schoolchildren in 2022 and 2023 for the art competition organised by the Mayors for Peace initiative.
Representatives of the media are invited.
In addition to the 25 drawings that children from Chemnitz submitted to the art competition in 2022 and 2023, there are also 14 drawings that children from Chemnitz's twin city Manchester entered in the competition. The exhibition is complemented by seven works of art by girls and boys from the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Melitopol, which were presented to the city of Chemnitz as a gift.
The exhibition can be seen until 22 March during the opening hours of the town hall: Mondays to Thursdays from 8 am to 6 pm and Fridays from 8 am to 4 pm.
Background Mayors for Peace:
Mayors for Peace is an international network of mayors and city leaders from around the world who are committed to a peaceful and secure world without nuclear weapons. The organisation was founded in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1982 and has since grown steadily in membership. Currently, 8,349 cities from 166 countries and regions belong to the network. Chemnitz has been part of the initiative since 2006, which follows the vision of cities and communities worldwide working together to increase the pressure on governments and international organisations to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.
Background to the "Peaceful Towns" drawing competition:
The drawing competition is aimed specifically at children and offers them the opportunity to express their ideas of peace and a peaceful city through art. It offers children not only a platform to showcase their artistic skills, but also an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas about peace with others. The submitted drawings are evaluated by a jury, which selects the most creative and expressive works.
In 2023, a total of 4,766 drawings were submitted in 115 cities from 19 countries. Of these, 2,536 pictures were in category 1 (6 to 10 years) and 2,230 drawings in category 2 (11 to 15 years). A total of 20 drawings were submitted from Chemnitz last year.
