The motto of this year's 59th carol singing campaign is "Together for God's creation - in Kenya and worldwide". The 2017 carol singing campaign draws a link between life in Central Europe and life in Turkana (north-west Kenya) and calls on people to support the "Water for Turkana" project.

The carol singing campaign was first launched in 1959 and has since become the world's largest solidarity campaign in which children help children in need. The campaign is organised by the children's missionary organisation "Die Sternsinger" and the Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ). Every year, funds from the campaign are used to support over 2,000 projects for children in need in Africa, Latin America, Asia, Oceania and Eastern Europe.
