Mayor Ludwig on events in Halle

Following yesterday's harrowing events in Halle, Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig said:

"Yesterday in Leipzig we celebrated the courageous demonstrators who helped bring down the Iron Curtain and reunite Germany. The whole of Europe changed. One result of this time is that Jewish life has flourished again in Chemnitz. More than 500 Jewish citizens have moved here or were born here. I am happy and grateful that this is the case.

The Jewish community has built a new synagogue in the city. In the words of Charlotte Knobloch, former chairwoman of the Central Council of Jews: 'Those who build, stay.'

Chemnitz should be such a permanent home for our Jewish community. Home includes security. I want Chemnitz, Saxony and Germany to be and remain a home for Jewish citizens. That is why all of us - citizens, the mayor and security authorities - are called upon to do the right thing every day."
