Mayor Ludwig: "Chemnitz continues to grow"
Population statistics for 2013 show another significant increase - Population grows to over 242,000 - Immigration mainly among younger people
Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "Chemnitz continues to grow - that is good and important news. It reflects the positive development of the city. The forecasts of the past, according to which Chemnitz was to shrink forever, have been refuted. After three consecutive years of population growth, we can now speak of a trend reversal. This is thanks to the people who are committed here, the successful companies and the university, which contributes a great deal to the city's attractiveness."
Chemnitz continues to grow: an increase of 774 inhabitants was recorded for 2013. At the end of 2013, more than 242,000 - 242,177 to be exact - Chemnitz residents were living in the city. Of these, 124,983 were women and 117,194 men. At the end of the previous year 2012, there were 241,403 inhabitants (125,033 women and 116,370 men). At that time, the population had increased by 858.
For the fifth year in a row, net migration has had a particularly positive impact, as significantly more people came to Chemnitz than left in 2013: A total of 14,760 people moved to the city last year, while 12,706 left.
Younger people in particular are coming to Chemnitz: with an increase of 2,054 people in net migration, 1,101 people were aged between 21 and 29. This was followed by the 16 to 20 age group with 588 and the 40 to 49 age group with 172 people.
If we look at the total number of people moving to Chemnitz, the picture remains the same: of the 14,760 people who moved to Chemnitz in 2013, the statistics under the heading "Migration by age group" show that the largest number by far was 5,750 people aged between 21 and 29. The other major groups moving to Chemnitz include 2,475 people aged 30 to 39, 1,753 aged 16 to 20 and 1,161 aged 40 to 49.
Part of the population growth is also due to the increased proportion of foreign students currently living in Chemnitz: According to information from Chemnitz University of Technology, 1,633 of the total 11,231 students as at 1 December 2013 come from other parts of the world. The largest groups here are students from India (28.4%) and China (25.8%).
The population statistics as at 31 December 2013 show a total of 9,582 foreigners living in Chemnitz. In the previous year, there were 8,434.
Only provisional figures are currently available for the number of births and deaths in the past year: 2,034 births and 3,247 deaths. There may still be changes due to late registrations for the month of December. However, these do not affect the balance of residents with their main place of residence as at 31 December 2013, as this is purely a cut-off date analysis.
