Mayor Barbara Ludwig travels to the Russian twin city of Volgograd
From Wednesday, 31 January to Saturday, 3 February, Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig will be visiting the Russian twin city of Volgograd at the invitation of Mayor Andrey V. Kosolapov. The occasion is the 75th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Stalingrad.
On Thursday, 1 February, the Lord Mayor of Chemnitz will take part in the wreath-laying ceremony on the Square of the Fallen Heroes. Afterwards, Barbara Ludwig will deliver a greeting at the city's reception. In the afternoon, a city tour including a visit to Mamayev Hill and the Panorama Museum of the Battle of Stalingrad are planned.
Participation in a military parade is planned for Friday, 2 February. In the afternoon, the guests from Chemnitz will attend the festive concert to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Stalingrad. This will be followed by a festive reception in the name of the governor of the Volgograd region. The evening will end with a fireworks display on the Volga promenade. On Saturday, 3 February, flowers will be laid at the cemeteries for fallen Russian and German soldiers in Rossoschka, just under 40 kilometres from Volgograd.
Keyword town twinning
The city partnership between Chemnitz and Volgograd, which has existed since 1988, was renewed on 29 August 2008 to mark the 20th anniversary. The active co-operation between Chemnitz and Volgograd encompasses almost all areas of social life. As part of the partnership, both cities are involved in encounter projects organised by the German-Russian Forum and maintain existing contacts in the fields of art, culture and sport.
