Mayor Barbara Ludwig congratulates Prof Thomas Geßner on his 60th birthday
To mark the 60th birthday of the Director of the Centre for Microtechnologies and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS, Prof. Thomas Geßner, an international symposium is being held today at Chemnitz University of Technology. A large number of well-wishers from science, business, politics and society are expected to attend the event, including Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
"Prof Geßner is one of those people who set themselves ambitious goals and achieve them: The Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems or the Smart Systems Campus are impressive proof of this. Without him, Chemnitz's scientific and economic landscape would look very different today. As an internationally active networker, he has also contributed to making Chemnitz known far beyond Saxony as a centre for pioneering research and development. A milestone birthday is a good time to say thank you for this and at the same time wish him all the best for hopefully many more tasks and projects," said Ludwig.
Prof Thomas Geßner began his career as a research assistant at the Central Institute for Nuclear Research at the Academy of Science in Rossendorf (Saxony). From 1983 to 1990, he was Director of the Centre for Microelectronics in Dresden (ZMD) before founding the Centre for Microtechnologies (ZfM) in 1991, of which he is still Director today. He has also held the professorship for microtechnology since 1993. Between 1994 and 1997, he was Vice-Rector of Chemnitz University of Technology before becoming Head of the Multi Device Integration Department Chemnitz at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM Berlin.
Between 2006 and 2008 he was Deputy Director of Fraunhofer IZM and Director of the Fraunhofer IZM Chemnitz branch. From 2006 to 2009, he was Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology. Since 2008, he has headed the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS.
