May bonfire on Walpurgis Night in Chemnitz
14 applications submitted by clubs, event organisers and private individuals to burn a traditional bonfire on Walpurgis Night, the eve of 1 May, were approved this year by the City of Chemnitz Public Order Office.
Authorised fires are lit in Chemnitz at the locations listed below, among others. (The list only includes the venues of the applicants who have agreed to publication).
- Hartmann-Platz from 6 pm to 11 pm
- Schulberg 5 in Glösa from 8 pm to midnight
- Kreisigstraße opposite the Eselsbrücke bridge in Rabenstein from 6 pm to midnight
- Viewpoint at the poplar tree in Einsiedel from 8 pm to midnight
- Kirchweg in the Euba district from 9 pm to midnight
- Goetheweg 58-60/corner of Rabensteiner Straße in Röhrsdorf from 7.30 pm to midnight
- Steinwiese 95, building yard of the Volksgesundheit allotment garden association from 6 pm to 11 pm
- An der Walzenmühle/corner of Eigenhufe in Erfenschlag from 8 pm to midnight
- Feldstraße 44a in Grüna from 6 pm to midnight
Walpurgis Night was named after Saint Walpurga, whose memorial day was celebrated on the day of her canonisation on 1 May until the Middle Ages. As a dance into May, the eve of May Day has also found its way into today's everyday life as an urban, modern event.
