"Max Meise" campaign - nest box building for young and old
DIY nesting box for at home
On Saturday, 5 March, from 9 am to 1 pm, interested children and young people will have the opportunity to pick up a nesting box kit to build themselves at the Chemnitz Nature Conservation Station, Adelsbergstraße 192. These can be used to build nesting boxes for birds, e.g. for various species of tits such as great tits and blue tits, pied flycatchers, starlings or redstarts, etc. at home. A donation of ten euros for the materials will go to the Saxon Ornithologists' Association.
For more than 20 years, the Chemnitz Nature Conservation Centre, Adelsbergstr. 192, has been organising the "Max Meise - nest box building for young and old" event. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is unfortunately not possible to build nest boxes together on site this year either.
Birds have fewer and fewer opportunities to find a suitable cavity to breed in, whether due to the loss of trees with breeding cavities, the renovation of buildings or new buildings made of glass without breeding opportunities. The "Max Meise" campaign aims to help birds find a suitable replacement. At the same time, a nesting box makes it possible to observe nature up close.
Max Meise - nest box building for young and old is a co-operation between the City of Chemnitz Environmental Agency, the Saxon Ornithologists' Association and the "Young Nature Guards Chemnitz" project. The project aims to introduce young people between the ages of 7 and 18 to nature conservation work.
