Massive damage to traffic-calming planting islands

Criminal charges filed after vandalism on Bahnstraße

The city of Chemnitz discovered a massive case of vandalism during its traffic trial on Bahnstraße, which was only launched last week. On 31 May, nine planting islands were installed there to narrow the road in sections and thus calm traffic, which were equipped with an automatic watering system.

Just two days later, however, attentive residents noticed severe damage. The safety wires of the trees on two planting islands had been cut and the trees themselves had been ripped out and stolen. Solar panels were also levered off and the boxes containing the technology for the irrigation system were destroyed. A planting island was also hit and a hit-and-run was subsequently committed.

The city of Chemnitz has filed a criminal complaint.
