Married for 70 years: Elfriede and Harri Müller celebrate the anniversary of their "wedding of grace"

Elfriede and Harri Müller from Chemnitz are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, 30 October 2013. Among the well-wishers at the couple's home at Stollberger Straße 47 in 09119 Chemnitz will be the City of Chemnitz: a representative of the Mayor's Office will offer the couple their congratulations on 30 October at 10:30 am.
Mutual respect and concern for their partner - according to Elfriede and Harri Müller, this is the secret of their long marriage. After all, they have now spent 70 years together and not all of them have been happy ones.
They tied the knot in the middle of the war, on 30 October 1943, after the two Chemnitz natives met at the Neugablenz inn in 1939. Elfriede Müller, née Riedel, was working as a shorthand typist for the city of Chemnitz at the time. Harri Müller, then employed by the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse, was called up for military service in September 1940. He returned home in 1944, severely wounded by shrapnel. The couple and their son, who was born in 1944, experienced the bombing of Chemnitz in February and March 1945, losing all their belongings.
Today, the family has two children, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Even though the couple are always happy to receive visitors and follow all the news of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren with great interest, they manage their everyday lives largely independently and organise help for the household. Reading the newspaper every day is particularly important to both of them, as it keeps them up to date with everything that is going on in Chemnitz and the world. Sport also plays an important role: as a former footballer, Harri Müller follows the games of Chemnitzer FC and is delighted that one of his great-granddaughters is following in his footsteps as an active footballer.
The 70th wedding anniversary is celebrated together with the family in the couple's home. This is entirely in keeping with Elfriede and Harri Müller's wishes, as they feel at home in their own four walls and want to spend as many more years together as possible.
