Opening of the Chemnitz Christmas market on 1 December

Every year during the Advent season, the area around Chemnitz Town Hall is transformed into a Christmas world in the Ore Mountains. From 1 to 23 December 2017, visitors and guests will be offered original Erzgebirge folk art, typical tree decorations, Advent arrangements and many Christmas and culinary delights at over 200 huts on the market square, Neumarkt, Rosenhof, Jakobikirchplatz, Richard-Möbius-Straße, Düsseldorfer Platz and Innere Klosterstraße. The Klosterweihnacht on Innere Klosterstraße takes you back to times long past. The "Erzgebirgsdorf" on Düsseldorfer Platz will also enchant its customers this year.

The Chemnitz Christmas market is open on 1 December 2017 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., from
2 to 22 December from 10 am to 9 pm and on 23 December 2017 from 10 am to 8 pm.

Father Christmas is expected every evening at 5 pm and always brings a fairytale surprise. Girls and boys aged four to six can also meet Father Christmas on the Christmas market stage.

This year, Claus Höhne and Ralf Pfüller will don the red coat and share the wonderful office of Father Christmas.

One of the attractions of the Chemnitz Christmas market this year will once again be the aroma of mulled wine, which will be served in Chemnitz mulled wine cups with a new design in 2017. The tempting aroma of roasted almonds and nuts, gingerbread and other delicacies will once again waft over the market.

This year, the youngest guests can once again enjoy rides on the Bimmelbahn, the Ferris wheel and our children's carousels. Small gifts can be made in the children's area.

One of the special attractions of the Chemnitz Christmas market is the five-storey, twelve metre high Christmas pyramid on the area between Neumarkt and Markt. On five floors, 24 figures depict everyday life in the Ore Mountains. The original Erzgebirge candle arch with lace maker and carver also forms one of the festively decorated entrances. The music box, whose turntable has an impressive diameter of 4.40 metres, is also not missing at this year's Chemnitz Christmas market. Miner and angel as well as snowman and smoker welcome visitors to the Chemnitz Christmas market in the traditional Ore Mountain style.

Mountain parade on 2 December 2017

One of the impressive highlights of the Christmas season is the 39th Great Mountain Parade on
2 December from 2 p.m. with more than 1,000 traditional costume wearers and mountain musicians. The impressive parade through Chemnitz city centre will begin at Theaterplatz and end with the final concert at Stadthallenpark at around 2.30 pm. There will be a pre-concert in the Stadthallenpark from 1.30 pm with a concert by the Saigerhüttenkapelle Olbernhau-Grünthal and the Singkreis Neustädtel.

Note for all residents of the areas around the Chemnitz Christmas market:

On 23 December 2017, the Chemnitz Christmas Market will be dismantled after closing time from 8 pm. This may result in increased noise pollution in some areas. The City of Chemnitz Trade and Market Department asks for your understanding. Every effort will be made to dismantle the market as quickly and quietly as possible.

Relocated weekly market on the area at the Red Tower on 23 December

Due to the Chemnitz Christmas market, the weekly market will take place on 23 December from
8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Red Tower.

Outlook for 2018

The first annual market in the new year will be held on 5 February 2018, 9 am to 4 pm. As usual, traders will be offering a wide range of goods around Chemnitz Town Hall. A wide range of food and drink will be on offer to cater for your physical well-being.

The closing date for applications is the last working day in December 2017.
