Markersdorf pedestrian zone more attractive in future
Construction work for the renovation and redesign of the Markersdorf pedestrian zone will begin on Monday, 3 November in the area on Albert-Köhler-Straße. On behalf of the Parks Department, work will begin here to renovate and redesign the area to make it more attractive (see graphic). The aim of the landscape architects from the planning office iproplan Planungsgesellschaft GmbH Chemnitz, who have been commissioned to plan the construction work, is to preserve the character of the existing area as far as possible and at the same time to increase the quality of stay and attractiveness for local residents.
The city of Chemnitz is investing around 142,300 euros in the construction project. The construction contract was awarded to Fachcenter Garten, Heinsdorfergrund, following a public tender. It is planned to complete the construction work by the end of March 2015, depending on the weather. Please note: Before the start of construction on 3 November, the green spaces department will remove the seat covers from the existing benches, which will continue to be used in the future, from 30 October.
The construction project will first be realised by dismantling the oversized paths and squares. Smaller, intensively designed recreational areas will then be created, which will also be linked to the neighbouring uses. Two larger recreational areas/seating areas will be incorporated into the pedestrian zone and paved with light-coloured slabs. In the eastern area - the target group here is children and young people - coloured seating cubes will be installed and the seating on the raised beds will be renewed. The western area - where families and senior citizens are the main users - will be upgraded with seating. Ornamental apples and ornamental cherries will add a visually appealing touch to the area, especially with their blossoms in spring. Groups of daffodils in the neighbouring lawns will also signal the arrival of spring. Strips of mosaic paving will attractively structure the areas of the Markersdorf pedestrian zone in future and set artistic accents, while at the same time emphasising the existing enamel paintings created by various artists, including Michael Morgner, which are located on the existing partitions/walls to the adjacent secondary school.
