Marathon tower in the sports forum is inaugurated
Grand opening: on 8 September, 10 a.m., Sportforum, Reichenhainer Straße 154 Family day at the Sportforum on 9 September, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On Friday 8 September at 10 a.m., the Marathon Tower in the Sportforum will be ceremoniously opened after extensive renovation. Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky and Mayor Michael Stötzer will hand over the symbolic key to Christian Pöhler, Head of the Saxony Olympic Training Centre.
Representatives of the media are invited to attend. (Access via Reichenhainer Straße, Gate 4)
Other political representatives and various sports associations and athletes will also be present. Guided tours of the building are planned from 10.30 am.
In addition to the Olympic training centre, a sports doctor and a performance diagnostics centre will later be given a new home in the basement of the building. The centrepiece of the tower is the prestigious reception hall in the middle of the building. In future, successful athletes can be welcomed in this ambience, under the restored, listed wooden ceiling.
Work on the 27-metre-high marathon tower in the Sportforum began in July 2020. The renovation was a major challenge. The roof of the tower had to be removed and an inner steel skeleton installed step by step.
Not only the listed marathon tower was renovated. New functional buildings were erected to the left and right of it. These include changing and sanitary facilities, storage rooms, barrier-free public toilets and a competition office. An eight metre high earth wall was built behind it. This preserves the historical appearance of the main stadium. It also protects the athletes from the wind during competitions.
Keyword marathon tower
The "command tower", later called the "marathon tower", was built between 1933 and 1938 according to the design of Chemnitz architect Fred Otto (1883 - 1944). Otto worked as a senior building commissioner and official building officer in Chemnitz from 1920 and as a city building officer in the Chemnitz building department from 1925. Other important buildings by Fred Otto include the Chemnitz municipal swimming pool and the building of today's Gunzenhauser Museum in the New Objectivity style. Fred Otto died in Chemnitz on 22 September 1944.
Family day at the Sportforum on Saturday, 9 September
On Saturday, 9 September, from 10 am to 4 pm, the Stadtsportbund e. V. is organising a family day at the Sportforum to mark the 70th anniversary of the Chemnitz sports schools. On this day, the individual sports that train at the Sportforum will present themselves, and former and current top athletes will also be present. The Saxony Olympic Training Centre will also be opening its doors in the new premises at the Sportforum.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the sports badge and from 10 a.m. to noon the FLIZZY sports badge (for children up to 6/7 years) can be taken in the athletics hall and the swimming pool.
Ice sports will be presented at the ice sports complex at Wittgensdorfer Straße 2a on this day from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Traditional football matches will take place in the main stadium and basketball matches in the sports schools' sports hall from 2.00 pm.
