Major street tree planting programme in spring
The campaign to plant 173 trees that began in autumn 2012 will be continued as soon as possible - a further 90 trees will be planted on Chemnitz streets after Easter
There are currently around 23,000 street trees in Chemnitz. One of the tasks of the City of Chemnitz is to maintain this stock, keep it safe for traffic, expand it where appropriate and necessary and close gaps that have arisen due to necessary felling. Due to the weather, only four of the eight road sections commissioned in autumn 2012 have been planted so far: Dürerstraße, Kantstraße, Trützschlerstraße and Oberfrohnaer Straße. According to the Parks Department, the increased deployment of several work teams on different road sections at the same time will enable the planting campaign, which has already begun, to be continued and completed quickly when the weather is suitable. A total of 173 street trees will be planted.
At the start of the planting season, 90 new street trees will be planted on five other road sections in Chemnitz. The contract is worth around 83,000 euros. The planting work is expected to be carried out by the company Fachcenter Garten+STL-Bau GmbH from Hauptmannsgrün starting after Easter.
Planting will take place on the extended road section on Hartmannstraße (in front of house number 24/26 police headquarters), where ten robinia trees will be planted, as well as on Limbacher Straße, where 14 maple trees will be planted. Following the extensive pruning and felling work on Bersarinstraße, eleven trees (ornamental cherry, field maple, alder, hornbeam) and shrubs will be planted in the front area (house numbers 30 to 38). On Eubaer Straße (between Kirchweg and Weißer Weg), a total of 36 street trees (24 maples and twelve ash trees) will be planted in the existing roadside lawns.
There are also plans to plant 19 urban lime trees on Scheffelstraße. As a prerequisite for the planting, new tree discs or planting strips will be created in the area between Dittersdorfer Strasse and Kauffahrtei.
With this extensive planting programme, it is to be hoped that spring will bring many days with suitable weather for the gardeners. It would be bad for the planting if the weather were to become very warm and dry very quickly, thus shortening the suitable planting period.
