On Monday 21 September, major construction work will begin on the Zwickauer Straße project. The works will take place in the Kappel district, on the section between Schillstraße and Am Feldschlösschen, and will be divided into five construction phases. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2028.
The plan is to completely resurface all traffic areas, refurbish the drinking water and gas mains, and replace the street lighting. In addition, a narrow-gauge track is to be reinstalled in Zwickauer Straße in the area of the Tram Museum. To enhance the street, a further 36 trees will be planted. The project is a coordinated construction initiative involving the City of Chemnitz’s Department of Transport and Civil Engineering, Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) and the utility company eins energie in sachsen.
During the works, the construction area will have to be closed to traffic in sections, with one side of the road closed at a time. A one-way system will be put in place. Traffic heading out of town will always use Zwickauer Straße, whilst traffic heading into town will be diverted via Jaenickestraße to Neefestraße. Drivers can rejoin Zwickauer Straße via Lützowstraße.
Unfortunately, the public car parks will be unavailable whilst the works are in progress. Pedestrians will be safely guided past the construction site at all times. Access to residents’ properties will be guaranteed at all times. The construction company and the City of Chemnitz are endeavouring to minimise disruption to all local residents as much as possible.
The total construction costs amount to approximately 4.4 million euros. The roadworks account for around 3.0 million euros of this. The company EBG Bau GmbH from Ehrenfriedersdorf has been commissioned to carry out the construction work.
