Combating weeds with hot water

The Parks Department is currently carrying out maintenance work on so-called sand-muddy paths in the most important parks, such as the Stadtpark, the Schlossteichanlagen and the Schlossberg.

Apparently, these areas in particular are characterised by wilting plant residues, which may suggest the use of herbicides such as glyphosate.

However, this is not the case: the removal or control of "path greening" here is chemical-free and based on hot water.

The hot water treatment of paths represents the current state of the art if the use of glyphosates is to be avoided and the capacity for manual treatment (weeding) is not available. The Parks Department has purchased a device for this purpose, which is mounted on a small lorry and will be frequently seen in the city's main parks in future. In this way, the Parks Department aims to ensure that our parks and gardens are maintained economically and ecologically using the available resources.

This pilot project will then be analysed to determine the extent to which the use of this technology can be expanded for the city.
