Ludwig Richter primary school to be renovated from September 2013

Funding approved for the majority of measures from the school building construction programme

Ludwig Richter Primary School is one of twenty schools to receive funding from the school building construction programme. Mayor Barbara Ludwig today accepted the funding notification from Brunhild Kurth, the Saxon State Minister for Education and Cultural Affairs.

"The school building construction programme allows us to realise important refurbishment projects at Chemnitz schools. Schools will be the focus of refurbishment in the coming years. With this decision, preparations can begin so that the Ludwig Richter primary school can also be refurbished from September."

The Free State of Saxony is supporting the project with a total of 1.2 million euros, with 1.7 million euros coming from the City of Chemnitz. The total cost of the construction project is around 2.9 million euros.

20 measures approved so far

Shortly before Easter, the city received the first notifications from the Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB). Funding has now been approved for 20 of 21 measures. Only one measure, the general refurbishment of Rabenstein primary school, is still outstanding. In total, the funding programme will provide around €40 million for school refurbishment in 2013 and 2014, of which the city will contribute just under €24 million.

Ludwig Richter primary school gets a facelift

A general refurbishment is planned for the Ludwig Richter primary school. The façade of the listed building is to be renovated. The heating and electrical installations will be overhauled. Bright, friendly classrooms, rooms for the after-school care centre and new specialist cabinets will be created. At the same time, the building will be equipped with a lift for the disabled. The Chemnitz-based engineering firm Lozek GmbH is responsible for the planning.

Construction is due to start in September 2013 and pupils will temporarily move to the Georg Weerth Middle School (Philipstraße 22) until December 2014 before they can use the fully renovated building again in 2015.

In recent years, the roof, sanitary facilities and windows at Ludwig Richter Primary School have been renovated.

School facts and figures

The school was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Around 200 girls and boys currently attend the three-form entry school. The building is approximately 4,000 square metres in size.
