"Lucky child with father"
Stefan Heym Prize winner presents new novel at Villa Esche
As part of the 6th Chemnitz Literature Days LESELUST, Christoph Hein, winner of the Stefan Heym Prize of the City of Chemnitz, will be presenting his recently published novel "Glückskind mit Vater" at Villa Esche/GGG, the International Stefan Heym Society e. V. and the City of Chemnitz on Wednesday, 13 April 2016 at 7 pm.
The event is sold out. Any remaining tickets are available at the box office for 15 euros (concessions 10 euros).
In his new novel, Christoph Hein unfolds all the registers of his narrative art and his historical diagnostic expertise. He tells the story of Konstantin, who was born in 1945 and grows up in the GDR as the son of a convicted and hanged SS man. Always trapped in his father's shadow, he has to endure all kinds of injustice, neglect and rejection. Suffering from the eternal misery, he makes several attempts to step out of his father's shoes: a new name, legionary work in France, return to the GDR and - almost - headmaster of a secondary school. In the end, the realisation remains: "Emancipation from general and personal history is doomed to failure", according to the publisher of Hein's story.
Christoph Hein was born in Heinzendorf/Silesia in 1944, grew up in Bad Düben and studied philosophy and logic in Leipzig and Berlin. From 1974 to 1979, Hein worked as an in-house author at the Volksbühne Berlin. His breakthrough came in 1982/83 with his novella "Der fremde Freund". Christoph Hein has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Uwe Johnson Prize and the Stefan Heym Prize of the City of Chemnitz.
