When it no longer gets dark at night, this has consequences. Alexander Kühn, University of Vienna, will shed light on the problem of light pollution in his lecture on 17 March 2016, 6 p.m., at the Chemnitz Environmental Centre, Henriettenstraße 5, 09112 Chemnitz.

Light pollution refers to the illumination of our night sky by artificial lighting. This is particularly prevalent in urban centres, but even in rural areas it is rare to experience an unlit night.

This is not only problematic for our energy balance and astronomers - the brightening of the night sky also has far-reaching ecological, health and social consequences. For example, the night is essential for human regeneration, for the foraging of nocturnal animals and the photosynthesis of plants.

In his lecture "Between light and shadow - the effects and regulatory possibilities of artificial lighting", Alexander Kühn uses impressive examples and current research findings to explain the impact of light pollution on humans and the environment and what can be done to combat it.
