Lord Mayor welcomes participants of the Special Olympics
Entry in the Golden Book of Sport: 30 June, 6.30 pm, Grüner Salon, Town Hall
On Friday 30 June at 6.30 pm, Mayor Sven Schulze will welcome the Special Olympics athletes from Chemnitz. To mark their successful participation in the world's largest sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities and people with multiple disabilities last week in Berlin, they will sign the City of Chemnitz's Golden Book of Sport.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.
From Chemnitz's perspective, the Special Olympics were more than successful. Marco Sohr won gold in horse riding and Judith Freyer and Frances Kressner each won gold in the 200 metre race. Katrin Irmscher won a silver medal in the 100-metre race and Judith Freyer in both the 400-metre individual and relay events. Bronze went to Frances Kressner and Nadin Richter in the 4x100 metre relay, to Katrin Irmscher also in a category of the 4x100 metre relay and to Anja Berthold in the shot put. Other Chemnitz athletes took fourth and fifth places in their disciplines.
The Special Olympics is the world's largest sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities and people with multiple disabilities. The competition is primarily attended by amateur athletes, while the Paralympics mainly invites competitive athletes to compete. The Special Olympics World Games take place every four years as summer or winter games. In Berlin, 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches were expected.
